§ 10-46. Licensing provisions.

  • (a)

    Required. It shall be unlawful for any person to own or keep a dog or cat four months or more of age unless he shall procure an annual license therefor.

    (b)

    Certificate of vaccination prerequisite. With any application for an animal license, every keeper or owner of a cat or dog shall present a certificate signed by a veterinarian that the dog or cat has been vaccinated against rabies and that said vaccination is currently valid.

    (c)

    Issuance of tag. Upon making application for a license giving his name and address, and the name, breed, color and sex of the dog or cat owned or kept by such a person, the owner shall be furnished with a license certificate and tag for the dog or cat for which the required fee has been paid. The shape of such tag shall be changed each calendar year, and it shall have stamped thereon the number of the tag to correspond with the license certificate.

    (d)

    Fee; expiration. The fee for each license shall be $5.00, which shall be paid to the village. The license shall expire on May 31 each year. The fee for a license purchased after June 30 shall be $7.50. No license shall be issued for less than the full annual fee.

    (e)

    Transfer. Whenever the ownership of a dog or cat shall change, the new owner shall notify the village and pay to the village the sum of $1.00, whereupon the village shall change the records accordingly for said dog or cat.

    (f)

    Tag to be affixed to collar. Every dog or cat kept within the village shall be provided by its owner or keeper with a collar or harness made of leather, metal, or other substantial material to which a license tag shall be securely fastened. It shall be unlawful for any person, other than the owner, to remove a license tag from a dog or cat.

    (g)

    Duplicate tag; fee. In the event that a license tag is lost or taken from any duly licensed dog or cat, even though the dog or cat may not have been taken up or impounded, the owner or keeper thereof shall pay upon such representation to the village a fee of $1.00 and shall be issued a new license tag.
