§ 34-23. Establishment.

  • There is hereby created and established a fire department to be hereafter known as the South Chicago Heights Fire Department, the object of which shall be the prevention and extinguishment of fire and the protection of life and property within the corporate limits of the village. The fire department shall be headed by a chief, who shall be appointed by the village president with the consent of the village board of trustees. The chief's tenure in office shall depend upon the chief's good conduct and efficiency. The chief shall be technically qualified by training and experience and shall have the ability to command people and hold their respect and confidence. Other personnel may consist of a deputy chief, assistant chiefs, captains, lieutenants and such other additional members of the fire department as may from time to time be prescribed by the president and board of trustees and they shall function as provided by the rules and regulations of the fire department. All appointments not required to be made by the board of fire and police commissioners shall be made by the village president with the consent of the village board of trustees upon recommendation from the fire chief. The maximum number of fire department personnel will be recommended by the fire chief and approved by the village president and village board trustees.
